The Dinner Party Screenplay is a book design project translating the infamous “Dinner Party” episode of The Office into a visual language that reflects the absurd tension, discomfort, and chaos unfolding throughout the story. Every element of the book—from the grid and layouts to typography, color, and image treatment—was carefully considered to mirror the increasingly unstable dynamic between Michael and Jan as both attempt to maintain the appearance of a normal, elegant dinner party.
The design balances structure with disruption, using large contrasting type and haphazard yet intentional layouts to create a sense of organized chaos. Mirrored imagery and humorous visual repetition reinforce the tension through physical redundancy, while distinct typographic voices establish contrast between the characters. An elegant serif typeface was selected for Jan’s dialogue, reflecting the composure and sophistication she desperately attempts to project, while a simple sans serif was used for Michael’s lines to create a more straightforward and opposing visual presence. The result is a screenplay that turns the episode’s uncomfortable humor and escalating tension into a physical reading experience.
